Our first week back!

Welcome back students and families! I am excited to kick off another great school year with your children. Students are learning their classroom procedures and reviewing HOWLs targets this week. Students have been filling out personal interest inventories to help my instruction be tailored to classroom activities. Students are also getting a handle on our new grading system in proficiency and standards. This year has many exciting changes, and we hope to maximize learning using these structures.

Intermediate I Spanish students have continued their work on their latest unit called "MovieTalk." The themes of this unit are "amistad" and "familia" (Friendship & Family). Intermediate Spanish students did the following MovieTalk discussions this week:

Before April Break

Intermediate I Spanish students have completed their last novela of the school year called "Piratas." Students followed the characters as they encountered new fiascos/adventures in every chapter. Students learned different structures in Spanish with each chapter. Students were asked guiding questions both written and orally.  The following chapters were featured:

Novice II students completed their first novela of the year called "El Nuevo Houdini" (The New Houdini). They have begun their newest unit in which they will focus on Spanish conjugation and structure. They have been working on a slideshow will will serve as their project assessment and demonstrate understanding of this grammatical concept. Slideshows are due April 30th.

Novice II students began their first novela of the year called "El Nuevo Houdini" (The New Houdini). Students will follow the character, Brandon Brown, as he encounters new fiascos/adventures in every chapter. Students learn different structures in Spanish with each video. Students are asked guiding questions both written and orally. The following activities were completed this week:

* Harry Houdini pre-reading 
* Capítulo uno: Una situación horrible (Chapter 1: A Horrible Situation)


Novice I Spanish students kicked off 2017 off with their first novela called "Las aventuras de Isabela." Students will read this 10 chapter book entirely in Spanish with a focus on different verbal and written structures with each chapter. This week we read:
* Yo soy Isabela (I am Isabela)
* Yo saco fotografías (I take photographs)

Students also reviewed their first two chapters in a Kahoot activity to gauge their understanding of our character and the events that occur. So far they have been great participants and actors for our stories!

Week of Culture

All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish students are engaging in Hispanic Heritage Week by exploring cultural traditions exclusive to Latinos. Each day we focused on different celebrations. The following was explored this week:

Intermediate I students are continuing learning about "La Quinceañera" and important traditions and rituals surrounding this celebration through various readings, MovieTalks, and speaking activities. See infinite campus for latest assessments.

Novice II Spanish students are investigating "El día de los reyes magos" (Three Kings' Day) and the tradition of "La Siesta" and the roots of this beloved custom. Students engaged in multiple class activities to demonstrate their understanding and make cultural connections. Students also completed a webquest involving many unique celebrations in Spain that have no likeness in the United States. 

Novice I Spanish students are investigating "El día de los reyes magos" (Three Kings' Day) and the tradition of "La Siesta" and the roots of this beloved custom. Students fina Students engaged in multiple class activities to demonstrate their understanding and make cultural connections.
